Following the core curriculum recommendation of the NCTM Standards, many states are expecting all high school graduates to earn credit in first-year algebra. For example, when modeling how to compare values of different fractions to determine "greater than," you might verbalize each step of the process for comparing fractions while pointing to each step written on chart paper (auditory and visual), represent each fraction using fraction circle pieces, running your finger around the perimeter of each piece, laying one fraction piece over the other one and running your finger along the space not covered up by the fraction of lesser value/area; "thinking aloud" by saying your thoughts aloud as you examine each fraction piece (visual, kinesthetic, auditory), verbalizing your answer and why you determined why one fraction was greater than the other, and having students run their fingers along the same fraction pieces and uncovered space (auditory, visual, tactile, kinesthetic).

Even now, more than 35 years later, a great many preservice and inservice math teachers make and implement their own decisions about whether calculators are appropriate or not. Thus, to a considerable extent, they do teach about and allow use of calculators, or they do not teach about and allow use of calculators, based mainly on their personal opinions Steck-Vaughn Strategies for Success: Student Edition (Level C) Math Preparatory (Strategies for Success: Level 3). Particularly relevant to mathematics education is the notion that “learning is the initiation into a social tradition [of mathematical inquiry, mathematical discovery, mathematical argument, and so on]” (Solomon, 1989, p. 150) Early Geometrical Thinking in the Environment of Patterns, Mosaics and Isometries (Icme-13 Topical Surveys). Repeating a task provides a record of this growth for teachers, parents and students. For example, in Kindergarten an open ended addition task (see work samples below) may be explored early in the year before children begin to write number sentences. Early in the year most kindergarten students will record their thinking in relation to this problem pictorially and may only record one or two solutions to the problem McDougal Littell Answer Key to Practice Masters: Algebra and Trigonometry, Structure and Method Book 2 (McDougal Littell Structure & Method). During a second visit with this group, Mr. Jones found that LaMont was really engaged in building the model, and he praised him discreetly on his efforts. But as Briars explained to me in an interview, there are many more ways to do this problem under the same standard. One way "is to show that 34-9 is the same problem as 35-10" by shifting up the number line. Another way would be to have students break 9 into 4+5. Then they can count backward from 34, first taking away 4 to get to 30, then taking away the remaining 5 pdf.
