Although the intentions of improvisation in the two genres of music were different: improvisation in Baroque times was primarily to permit musician virtuosity, improvisation in Jazz was primarily for the expression of a musician's mood or feelings, there are some elements that tie them together. Critics consider rhythm and blues's birth to coincide with the decline of big bands and jazz's turn toward the bop emphasis on soloing. James Hale characterizes the phenomenon here, although it is certainly nothing new to jazz discourse.
