It is ironic that the first jazz recordings were made in New York City on January 30, 1917, by a second-rate group of white musicians from New Orleans called the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. The two genres are now quite distinct, but have overlapped significantly throughout the 20th century. It is the home of the infamous DJ Larry Levan. Black folks (except for the "knee-gro elite,") know EXACTLY what James Brown is talking about... This binary system is dramatically reflected in the white key/black key dichotomy found on the piano--the dominant instrument in the teaching and performance of western music from the Age of Enlightenment onwards.

Jazz had its beginnings in the United States but is now considered to have a fine mixture of African culture thrown in with it. There are four distinct parts to jazz music that include rhythm, harmony, melody, and tonal qualities Jazz Guitar Voicings - Vol. 1. By performing their music with increasingly complex arrangements for ever larger orchestras, Swing musicians helped erode the wall between our definitions of popular music and the art music generally labeled “classical.” The first great artists of Swing were African American Next to a Letter from Home: Major Glen Miller's Wartime Band. Before him, this genre was horn-driven all right, but it was all about sax. Braun's smoky muted trumpet and flugelhorn, laid over grooves sharp enough to shred cheddar with, brought some of that Miles grace and cool to listeners tired of the same old thing. No doubt Chris Botti thanks his lucky stars that Braun paved the way. Previous high profile careers have also proven effective boosts to a unique sub genre spearheaded by Higher Octave Music Solace and Other Short Works. In 1987, the US House of Representatives and Senate passed a bill proposed by Democratic Representative John Conyers, Jr. to define jazz as a unique form of American music stating, among other things, "...that jazz is hereby designated as a rare and valuable national American treasure to which we should devote our attention, support and resources to make certain it is preserved, understood and promulgated." They used these new instruments to make new sounds. Composers writing in the 1990s and the 2000s, such as John Adams (born 1947) and James MacMillan (born 1959) often use a mixture of all these ideas, but they like to write tonal music with easy tunes as well Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course Sampler: For Clinics, Seminars, Workshops. So diverse are the styles adopted throughout the greater part of the present century that only by experimentation can listeners discover for themselves whether certain composers are to their particular taste or not.
